Sustainable Farming
Rod Smith was an early participant of Countryside Stewardship, with options for Pink Footed geese migration. Rod uses a ground source heat pump and solar for diversifications and is doing some experimental work on how to improve his very heavy soils. Rod is trialling straw for muck arrangements but also an innovative compost that includes gypsum and rock dust. He is also experimenting with cover crops with the aim of possibly moving from min-til at the moment to no-til in future. All of these practices promote sustainable farming which is important to Rod as he minimises his environmental impact, contributing to local climate action.
